Big Snow, Resorts Open More Terrain and Ski and Snowboard Season off and running

Well the warm end of early fall turned quickly as the central Rockies in Colorado have gotten over 2 feet of winter snow. I skied today at Loveland and it was mid winter snow - soft and easy to carve. After a week of storms the skies cleared and it was a bluebird day. I know at Loveland and elsewhere Ski Patrol is working hard to open new terrain. This press release just hit my desk as Loveland opens even more terrain and lifts for the coming weekend.I can testify the snow and terrain included soft powdery bumps today. I had to pinch myself that is was only October 28. OH how sweet it is!!!

Giant Snowstorm Opens More Terrain! at Loveland Ski Area.
Mother Nature really pulled through this time!  A giant snowstorm that helped us open this past Sunday continued through Tuesday leaving behind nearly 3 feet of natural snow.   Needless to say the mountain looks like mid-winter and our attention has turned from snowmaking to opening new runs.  On Wednesday both Spillway and Nix Nox were opened and we are excited to announce that this Friday Chair 6 will open!  This opening will provide access to the runs Keno, Blackjack, Roulette, Straight Flush and Royal Flush.  Lower Richards will also open on Friday.

This was a picture from my camera looking up at the entrance to Nix Nox. It was a great run.

Pictures from around the country keep trickling in with reports and pictures of significant snow from Whistler in BC to the Midwest where Wild Mountain is ready to open any day and the New England where snow making crews are already hard at work to get resorts open and ready.

Be sure to check out all the great deals available on discount lift tickets and coupons for Mountain Sports Club members this winter. Join early and save even more.

For the die hard New England skiers and riders Sunday River in Maine kicked off the season with one run opening on Saturday.

Early Season Skiing and Snowboarding

While we bask in record breaking warmth here at the base of the Rockies, most everyone I know is looking forward to cooler temps, snow and the upcoming ski and snowboard season.

I for one look forward to October turns and I am counting the days to see whether Loveland Ski Area, or Arapahoe Basin opens first this season in Colorado. Here are a few early season start and preparation updates for coming 2010.11 ski and snowboard season.

Loveland Ski Area in Colorado, has started snowmaking operations in the last week and there have been reports of early snows at the top of the pass and area. An October opening is pretty much a given.

This coming weekend sees Timberline Ski Area in Oregon reopening for weekends starting this Friday, Oct. 1. The plan is to operate the Magic Mile and Palmer chairs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October.

Recently we were in Sunday River, Maine for a trade show and they look for any window to make snow and get open in October as well if possible. If you are heading in this direction make sure to check out the great deals available at The Bethel Inn and enjoy classic New England charm and comfort at  a great value.

Resorts throughout Colorado and the central Rockies reported snow at higher elevations with snow dropping as low as 7,500 feet. Loveland and Arapahoe Basin have officially gotten the snow guns going as the race to be first to open for the year has begun. The grey wet skies the past few days has chatter turning to winter. What pass do you have? Any trips planned? or what is the best closeout deal on skis from last year? Yes, ski season is rapidly about to be upon us and I am counting the days to get my first turns in.

Over the pass in Summit County Arapahoe Basin will still be operating for at least another month. Great lodging deals at Summit Cove and other Colorado lodging properties. Looking for a place this summer make sure to use the list of deals at the growing list of Colorado lodging properties.

Just saw a note our friends at Jay Peak in Northern Vermont will open for the weekend. Killington a tad further south is also open. MSC members enjoy lodging deals in the area and throughout Vermont as well.

Last week I had the pleasure of skiing a couple of days at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah who will stay open through June, snow permitting. It was an exciting week as I was able to attend the PSIA - Professional Ski Instructors of America annual Acedemy featuring top ski instructors from around the country. The conditions were perfect spring skiing wiht lots of sunshine and a relaxing way to keep getting quality turns in for the what is left of this season.

More lodges, shops and next up is River Raft Guides and listings

The spring ski and snowboard season continues to be great across the country. It may have been an uneven start to the season in certain parts of North America but it certainly is in full swing still. We had the chance to ski at Copper Mountain and Loveland this past weekend. The snow started to soften around 10:30 - 11:00 but you had to pay attention to what direction the slope was facing (referred to as aspect of the slope in certain circles) as the angle of the sun significantly affected how soft different runs were.

Saturday was St Patrick's day and the base of Copper Mountain was jamming. Not only had the mountain rocked all day, the village celebration was now about to kicking in by the time w made it to the bottom of the hill. Live music was being served up by the Samples a favorite son band from Boulder, Colorado. The sun was shining, the beer was flowing and smiles were everywhere. On days like this we savor spring and look forward to sqeezing out all the great spring days we possibly can go and ski or ride.

One reminder for this weekend and those heading out to the high country the next several months. The high bowls and peaks that were North facing at both areas still had soft silky winter snow from an earlier storm during the week. At Loveland we rode the Ridge chair and traversed high and far left to find the soft goods. It was about a 20 minute trek, but well worth the effort.

A couple of hot little spots we found this weekend were:

  • Backcountry Brewery in downtown Frisco - We have beed here several times and the beer is always great. A selection of seasonal beers, a wide range from Pale ales, browns, great stout and prters microbrews and a full menu await anyone who enters. The surprise was on Friday night. A Friday night Happy Hour - $1 pints, and 2 for 1 appetizers. 4 of us had 3 appetizers and 4 rounds, we got out of the brewery with a $40 tab. That was one of the best evening happy hours I have seen in ski country on a Friday night in years.
  • Farley's Chop House - Main Street Frisco Colorado. It had been years since I had eaten here, but I will be back sooner. We rolled in on Saturday night of St Patty's expecting a long wait. Surprise a seat and full menu at the bar as we walked in. Impressive menu with seafood, plenty of steaks and an affordable yet complete wine list. Both of us ordered the Lamb Tendorloin and it was excellent, this was served with a Cilantro/Sour Cream mashed potatoes which gave it a little of the green color for the day and offered a unique and flavorful potato serving. Not to be forgotten was a fantastic turkey and andouille sausage soup that was to die for. The food was very good and the atmosphere was enjoyable. We had expected a crowd and found Main Street Frisco and the two establishments we visited to be laid back and not over the top as I suspect was the case in some of the other the resort towns.
