Warm Temp & Snow Melt Preps Rivers for Rafting Season next In the Rockies

With warm temperatures driving the snow melt high in the Rockies the rafting companies are gearing up for the 2015 raft season. Parts of the mountains are looking carefully at snow pack and its impact on the coming season.

Free Ski Day at Purgatory This Sunday

The new ownership group at Purgatory Resort in Durango,CO, has announced Free lift tickets this Sunday, April 12, 2015 as a thank you to the locals. Just last week it was announced the resort ownership group would be replacing the old Chair 8 with a new detachable quad this summer.

The regular daily operations of the resort ended last weekend but it was announced one last weekend the area would open with special lift ticket promotions. Specials include 2 lift tickets for $50 on Saturday and the free ticket promotion. All Purgatory season passes, including midweek passes are valid this bonus weekend.

Eldora Ski Area Gets Expansion Go Ahead

Our local area Eldora Ski Area, a short ride from our hometown of Boulder, recently received the thumbs up for their proposed and much needed expansion and lift upgrades from the Forest Service. The process is not done as there are 2 more waiting periods for objections. As expected there are those who are not happy with the go forward plan but we are confident that at the end of the day the area will get the go ahead.

One item we were pleased to see was the added parking spots as currently busy weekends and holidays has the area turning away guests for lack of parking places. Closely located to Boulder and the North Denver Metro Area the resort continues to be a popular destination for many who wish to avoid the congested I-70 corridor. The area does need an upgrade as the population grows along the North Denver to Wyoming corridor as more and more locals want ski and snowboard options without going through I 70. Eldora offers the best alternative and has the physical plant to expand these options. The planned chair replacements, new trails, expanded dining options as well as more parking are needed to better serve the local market.

Stay tuned for more details and how the final decision looks then there is the timing. I am sure the Eldora Ski Area management is eager to get going to upgrade the facilities and services.

I found it interesting to see there season pass giveaway promotion as well to build out the database.

Balsams Wilderness a Grand Resort Rebirth?

The Balsam's in Northern New Hampshire has been closed for several years now. I know of the area as I have brothers who have worked there and live in Colebrook, NH. Over the lest few month's word had been circling that Les Otten of Sunday River and American Skiing Company fame was soon to surface with an investor group to be the catalyst of this rebirth and new mountain resort.

Let's keep our eyes on this one for more details. Here is a clip on the coming ski experience - With a base camp at 2,350 feet above sea level, The Balsams has been called one of nature’s most glorious balconies. Due to its location in a true alpine climate zone, avid skiers and riders will experience more dependable snow and a longer winter season year in and year out. With 2,200 skiable acres of alpine terrain, one of the largest vertical drops, and 100 km of Nordic trails, The Balsams will be larger and more varied than any other resort in the east.

New Expanded Vail Resorts Pass for kids - Vail Resorts is expanding its program for fifth and sixth graders, formerly known as School of Shred, to include all kindergarten through fifth graders. Vail has renamed the product “Epic SchoolKids Colorado Pack,” and the program provides 16 days of free skiing—four days each at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Keystone.
