Teton Travels - Big snows, big mountains and great deals

It had been way too long since I had made the winter journey North out of Boulder County to the Jackson Hole and the Tetons. After annual pilgrimages that would cover a 15 year span my drought of winter in the Tetons was now at 17 years and ready to end. With reports of record December snows and the need for follow up work with clients it was just the right road trip to kick off the 2013 year.

The journey by vehicle is a 500 mile trip North through the towns of Ft Collins, CO, taking 287 to Laramie and then west on I 80 to Rock Springs before heading North. Weather was pretty good as there were only small areas of wind and blowing snow. I have made this trip when it is non stop snow, blowing winds and black ice most of the 500 miles. It is a ride that can be close to 8 hours or 12 - 13 depending on weather and roads. Today was to be on the short side of that time line.

Once I headed north on 181 out of Rock Springs the sun was slowly starting to set in the west and the views were grand. By the time I had gotten to Pinedale and headed through Bondurant toward Hoback Junction the big snows of the last month were apparent by the sizes of the snowbanks. By now I sure was ready to get to Teton Village.

I arrived in that evening in Teton Village to check in at the Alpenhof Lodge. The lodge is so convenient as no one is closer to the tram dock. The breakfasts are fantastic as are all the meals, but the beds are to remember. After a 500 mile drive it is nice to know that comfort awaits at the end of this part of the journey. After checking in it was time to wander over to the Mangy Moose Saloon.

The Mangy Moose Saloon is truly one of the great classic ski bars in ski country. Very good live music for apres ski daily, good food, great selection of libations.

The next day was a bluebird day with several inches of fresh snow. It was to be my first ride in the new tram this day and the Gondola as well. The beauty of Jackson Hole is all around you as you ride the tram 4100 plus feet in 12 minutes. I still love the tram ride and the feeling getting off the tram is like being on the top of the world. It would prove to be a great day one of the world's great ski resorts.

Big Snows Brings Many Smiles at Resorts for the Holidays

Big Snows across the country has brought many smiles at ski and snowboard resorts across the country for the holidays. After a tough season last year and a slow start that had resorts close and work to reopen for the holidays cold temps and big snow is a great Christmas gift.

Reports from areas like Magic Mountain in Southern Vermont are issuing storm updates with their powder alert of close to a foot of fresh to rip turns in.

My Colorado snow report and emails shows new snow today in Crested Butte, Durango, Monarch, Silverton, Sunlight and across the state.

Free Ski Day at Brian Head Resort December 13, 2012

As we get this season going and the economy still sputters to recovery it is always nice to see great aggressive promotions form our resort friends. This one from Brian Head Resort in Utah we just had to get out there.

Thursday, December 13th, will be Free Ski Day at Brian Head Resort.  There will be FREE Lift Tickets and FREE Rentals.  We are no longer accepting reservations for Ski School, as our classes are full.
For those who have already made reservations for Free Ski Day, we’re excited that you will be joining us.  We just wanted to take minute and go over a few minor details to ensure that your day is as enjoyable as possible.
For those who enrolled in one of our renowned ski or snowboarding lesson programs, check in will start at 9:30 a.m. in the Navajo Lodge Learning Center. If you have children enrolled in Kids Camp, please remember that you will need to pick them up for lunch, or if you choose, you can purchase their lunch for $7 at check in that we will be serving to the children in our Kids Camp lunch room.
The ski and snowboard equipment that will be provided for the day free of charge will be our standard rental equipment packages, which is the latest ski and snowboard equipment available anywhere.  If you would like to try our high performance rental equipment, we will also have those packages available to rent for just $40.00 for skis and $47.00 for snowboards.

Finally, if you have children you would like to enroll in daycare, our State-licensed daycare facility will be open and the cost is $15.00 per hour or $85.00 for the day.

Hats off to the staff at Brian Head Resort. So now get out and play hooky from work or school and enjoy the day.
