It sure has been an up and down start to this ski and snowboard season around the country. I am pleased to awake this Christmas morning to new snow here in Colorado, across the west, reports of powder from Northern Vermont, the midwest and snow fall as far south as Maryland. Free Ski Day at Brian Head Resort December 13, 2012

As we get this season going and the economy still sputters to recovery it is always nice to see great aggressive promotions form our resort friends. This one from Brian Head Resort in Utah we just had to get out there. 

Thursday, December 13th, will be Free Ski Day at Brian Head Resort.  There will be FREE Lift Tickets and FREE Rentals.  We are no longer accepting reservations for Ski School, as our classes are full. 

For those who have already made reservations for Free Ski Day, we’re excited that you will be joining us.  We just wanted to take minute and go over a few minor details to ensure that your day is as enjoyable as possible.

For those who enrolled in one of our renowned ski or snowboarding lesson programs, check in will start at 9:30 a.m. in the Navajo Lodge Learning Center. If you have children enrolled in Kids Camp, please remember that you will need to pick them up for lunch, or if you choose, you can purchase their lunch for $7 at check in that we will be serving to the children in our Kids Camp lunch room. 

The ski and snowboard equipment that will be provided for the day free of charge will be our standard rental equipment packages, which is the latest ski and snowboard equipment available anywhere.  If you would like to try our high performance rental equipment, we will also have those packages available to rent for just $40.00 for skis and $47.00 for snowboards. 

Finally, if you have children you would like to enroll in daycare, our State-licensed daycare facility will be open and the cost is $15.00 per hour or $85.00 for the day.

Hats off to the staff at Brian Head Resort. So now get out and play hooky from work or school and enjoy the day.

Snow, resort openings and winter in October

With new snow pounding the western US we are very pleased to see more and more resort openings and great pictures of snow and skiing. Yesterday, I had the great fortune to ski Copper Mountain in Colorado with the PSIA demo team. The surface conditions were excellent and especially for October! Great carving and cruising snow to get the legs started for the coming winter season. Today first day soreness from using muscles not used in awhile, tomorrow a hot yoga class to stretch it out as we prepare for a big snowy winter.

Just this week Loveland opened on Tuesday here in Colorado.
Now another storm has brought more snow. Reports of feet of snow in Tahoe. Squaw is opening! Kirkwood is posting back country powder shots. The word is Jackson Hole received 10 inches of snow and most western resorts are reporting new snow in the last 2 days with more on the way.

Loveland Ski Area in Colorado will open for 2012.13 ski and snowboard season tomorrow Tuesday October 23, 2012. Loveland joins Arapahoe Basin who opened last week as the second Colorado ski are to open for the new ski and snowboard season. The resorts have relied upon good snow making conditions to get open and will get some help from Mother Nature later this week as a storm is scheduled to bring new snow to the mountains of Colorado and the Rockies.

Fall, New England, classic hotels and new discounts for 2012.13 skis eason

I welcome that duty calls for me to head to New England each year right after Labor Day. There is the annual gathering of New England Ski areas and related vendors/suppliers each year at this time of the year as we prepare for our next winter ski and snowboard season.

This year my travel day to get here fell on September 11. Truly a day we all remember where we were in the early hours of that fateful day.  It is always a long day of travel going from Colorado to Maine. But once at the destination I get to settle in for a few days at The Bethel Inn & Resort. Truly a classic New England hotel and resort with great meals and spacious rooms. And yes there is wifi here for those, like me, who need it to be able to go away.  The resort has a golf course on location, a spa, several restaurants, an engaging pub and in winter cross country skiing right from the location. Ski shop and a golf pro shop on premise as well.

One pleasant discovery was the dining across the street from The Bethel Inn at 22 Broad Street at Gideon Hastings House. The dining and atmosphere was spot on. The place is a classic New England 5 room B & B with excellent dining. The owners Amy and John were working that evening and the service was impeccable. I particularly liked how they made adjustments on the meal I requested. There were mussels on the menu as an appetizer and I really wanted mussels and pasta as a main course. They gladly accommodated and made an entrée as requested that was perfect. Their martini’s (advertising 20 specialty martini's) are also one of their specialties and combined with a fine wine selection, The initial visit and experience was certainly one that assures I will visit them again on my next visit to Bethel and Sunday River area.

New Echo Mountain Owners Make Area a Private race club

Not happy with the ski racing opportunities for your kids and others? Well one parent just solved that problem by buying Echo Mountain just outside of Denver. Now there will be the Front Range Ski Club operating as a world class ski race training facility.


Denver's closest ski area was put up for sale in June after operating at a loss for six consecutive seasons, and was sold at auction this past week to Pykkonen Capital LLC. This group plans to turn the mountain into a private race training facility. The target date is November 1 opening for the new Front Range Ski Club at Echo.

"We want to announce that Echo Mountain has been sold to new owners and the new owners have decided to change the basic format of the ski area to focus on ski racing training," the previous owner group, led by Jerry Pettit, posted to the Echo Mountain website and Facebook page this morning.
"We have enjoyed the challenge of establishing a new ski area and meeting all the families, snowboarders and skiers as they used the facility. For those of you that bought season passes for next season, we will be refunding your payment through your credit card over the next few days."

Nora Pykkonen, the new owner, confirmed this morning that the Front Range Ski Club at Echo is completely abandoning the terrain park concept developed by the previous owners over the last six seasons. The new focus will be on training for aspiring ski racers of all ages, said Pykkonen, whose own kids --ski racers ages nine, eleven and fourteen -- inspired the concept. Her young racers had been accepted into the prestigious Vail Mountain School, but there was dissension among the family about leaving their home and schools in Evergreen. Rather than moving to Vail, the Pykkonen family has attracted a team of former World Cup and Olympic athletes and coaches to Echo, including four-time Olympian Sarah Schleper, two-time NCAA champion Mike Farny, former Norwegian National Team member Peter Brenna, and five-time Olympian Patrik Jaerbyn.

"This won't just be a place where we're just setting up a bunch of gates for gate bashing," Pykkonen says. "Our goal is to set up a World Cup-level training program, with top coaches and the entire mountain divided into separate stations for training.
