Mountain Sports Club of North America and Shell Gas Promotion

Boulder December 28, 2006

Mountain Sports Club of North America is pleased to announce participation in the Shell Ski Free promotion. This promotional program builds on our effort to not only drive incremental skiers and snowboard visits to resorts and corresponding merchants, but to help them build a database of who these skiers and snowboarders.

By sending participants to the web to register for the valuable savings vouchers, resorts now have the name, email and mailing address of those who redeem the vouchers and visit their resort.

The marketing budget for this promotional program includes $500,000 of media, 550 Shell Stations and 1 million vouchers are being distributed throughout Idaho, Washington, Colorado and Oregon to encourage folks to go out skiing and if additional information is required go to the skifreedeals.com website. "We are pleased to collaborate with the Mountain Sports Club in providing more value for our clients in the Pacific Northwest - Estelle West, SkiFreeDeals.com".

A promotion that targets vacationing, regional weekend and destination market skiers and outdoor enthusiasts. Strong in season promotion, now with email messaging.

This program builds on existing promotions where the Mountain Sports Club membership is featured and included as part of the 4th and 5th Grade passport programs in the Pacific Northwest and Ski New Hampshire. By encouraging more participation to these target groups with incentives there is a higher likelihood of converting the users to more frequent participation in skiing and snowboarding.

The Mountain Sports Club program provides skiers and snowboarders extensive discounts and savings on lift tickets, lodging, travel, shopping and more. Members register for this new online service at www.MountainSportsClub.com. The service is also being provided as a gift on purchases of $50 or more through specialty retailers – Sun and Ski Sports (16 locations in 7 states across the South), Ski Chalet with 3 locations on the DC and Northern Virginia metro region and The Ski Stop in Long Island, New York.

Pre - Holiday Skiing and more snow in the Colorado Rockies

Dateline December 16 & 17, 2006

Location Copper Mountain, Colorado

You can feel that the holiday season is upon us as the resorts receive the initial wave of holiday visitors. Our family joined the march for one last weekend in the Colorado central Rockies, before the holiday rush. Copper received 5 inches of new snow yesterday and they are calling for additional snow showers the next several days. It should cover the rocks starting to show on the steeper runs and soften snow across the mountain. The local paper announced that all the Summit County resorts continue to open new and steeper terrain just in time for the holidays.

After a day on the slopes on Saturday we gathered at Endo’s in the village for après skis drinks. Given we have 3 young boys and our friends had 2 as well it was key to find a place that has pool tables, video games, foosball and room for all to enjoy. Endos is conveniently located and fits the bill. Plenty of tasty local micro brews and traditional beer from which to choose ones favorite libation.

Saturday night Copper kicked off their holiday celebration with En Fuego. This celebration included fire jugglers, torchlight parade, fireworks and a variety of entertainment in the Village. The Village environment has proven to be a huge step in creating atmosphere and ambiance at Copper. With bonfires and entertainment throughout the village it was a warm and festive atmosphere.

Sunday morning we awoke to light snow showers that softened the snow and provided a very good ski day for Sunday. We have developed a pattern of jumping on American Eagle and heading straight to Sierra Chair (S Chair) to ski Union Bowl. Today was no exception. We were greeted with soft wind blown underneath with a couple of inches of new snow on top. The back side going into Gold Digger and down to Timberline proved to be untracked after several descents down different lines in Union Bowl.

Later in the morning we made the decision to hike the 10 minutes above the chair lift to Julies Vision. The run was simply great. The initial turns were broken soft powder followed with untracked lines. One section we skied had the old debris of an earlier avalanche from control work making portions of the untracked a little stickier and trickier. While we did not make it over to Spaulding Bowl, friends of our reported it was open and spectacular skiing as well. Plenty of soft powdery snow to be had for all who venture that way.

With snow and snow showers predicted for most of the balance of the week, Copper Mountain and the Colorado Rockies are a great choice for skiing and riding this holiday vacation. There is abundant snow and terrain open for everyone.

Book your next ski vacation to Copper Mountain online with Mountain Sports Club and save.

Go to the Mountain Sports Club Travel Desk and save on your next trip to the mountains.

Continued Good Early Season Skiing and more deals for Members

Boulder, Colorado - December 14, 2006

Last weekend December 10 th, Sunday was our third weekend in a row of heading to Summit County Colorado and skiing Copper Mountain. Once again it was superb early season skiing and riding. We were able to ski and ride in Union Bowl off the Sierra Chair as if it was mid season skiing conditions. The previous week we had skied this as it was opened. It was terrific soft broken snow with easy steep bumps.

The kids were in ski and snowboard school and I must say they have done a great job with their Scooter program for juniors in making sure our three boys - 11, 9 and 6 - are having a great time and learning new skills weekly. For my wife and I it is a joy to get to ski all day with friends as well.

We stayed at a condo at the base of Super B chair in East Village from Frisco Mountain Rentals. It was a great condo with convenient locations as well.

Frisco, Copper Mountain Colorado and Thanksgiving n the Rockies

November 24, 2006

Skied the last two days at Copper Mountain in Summit County Colorado. Each day the terrain and snow was plentiful for November. A nice mix of groomers and bumps gave the us a full day of skiing. There were morning crowds at the American Flyer chair out of the base area. We found that skiing and riding off the Super B chair ensured virtually no of very small lift lines.
Here we also found a more interesting mix of terrain and conditions that were not as hard and scratchy as the center of the mountain. Each day new runs were opened offering more diversity. It was fairly busy and we skied Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day before the holiday crowds. Staying in Frisco we rented a 4 bedroom townhouse from Big Horn Rentals. It was located walking distance from downtown off 5th Street. The pool and clubhouse facility was clean and included three outdoor hot tubs, once indoor with a heated pool and sauna and steam room. We would gladly rent and stay at this unit again.

One new discovery in town was the Frisco Internet Cafe. This service I find as a necessity on many trips. The service is located adjacent and inside the Frisco Lodge on main street. At $6 an hour the connection - high speed wifi - and friendly atmosphere made this an easy to use and access stop on 2 days of my trip.

Not to be forgotten is the morning, or anytime, stop at the Butterhorn Cafe across the street from the Frisco Lodge on Main Street. This cafe has been here for almost 20 years and has wonderful baked goods, breads with a sumptuous breakfast menu.Sandwiches and more are available or lunch. This is and has continued to be one of my favorite stops in the AM or after and wanted a cup of coffee and an afternoon baked good.

More deals, skiing, riding and reviews. Happy Thanksgiving.

It is the first holiday of the winter ski and snowboard season. It was truly a dash getting the live registrations and coupons working at the Mountain Sports Club site. But with a huge effort by our partners at Premity - Jeremy and Dan, to enable this feature and more. Members have stated using the services and new members are registering daily. We wish to thank everyone for their help and support in getting this launched and ready for the holiday. There is good snow in the central Rockies and resorts opening all around the continent. Now is the time to get your gear and start making plans for trips.
Yesterday skied Arapahoe Basin and enjoyed a great Colorado Blue bird day. With the two main lifts - Exhibition and Lenawee providing top to bottom skiing, there was a surprising amount of terrain and soft snow to be skied. We spent most the day mixing it up between cruisers and soft bump runs under the Lenawee chair. I also noticed a new mid mountain lodge being built. This facility I was told would be ready to open around March 1. This coincides with the busy spring season when the Basin cranks into high gear. We will keep you updated as this facility opens. The snow conditions and variety of skiing and riding was nothing short of excellent for this time of year. There have been January's in recent memory where I had wished the snow was this good. Access was also available to the far east side of the West wall toward Pali. Lots of good snow and a great day.

The plan is to ski Copper Mountain the next 2 days we will post a review on the Copper page later this week.

New member deals include:
- Pats Peak New Hampshire - Coupons to be live any day. Savings from $5 Daily to $10 Daily
- Ramada Inn Rutland Vermont - Listing and coupons to be live any day. Save up to 50% off lodging.
- Colorado Ski Tunes - Listing and coupons to be live any day. Save 20% on ski and snowboard tunes.

- Terry Sports 3 locations in Steamboat Springs Colorado - Save 10% on walk in rentals. Save 15% on purchases of ski accessories.

Kicking off 2006/07 Ski Season at Loveland

Monday October 30, 2006

Dateline Boulder, Colorado

Friday was the 24th time out of the last 28 October’s that I have had the good fortune of skiing and making turns in Colorado. I had the opportunity to get to Loveland Ski Area and check out the incredible early season snow. The ski season began early this year in the Colorado Rockies. Arapahoe Basin was the first to open Friday October 13 th, followed by Loveland Ski area the next day. Since then the state and central mountains have received several snow falls. The one that kicked the season into a higher gear was the middle of last week when most of the mountains received 18 – 14 inches of snow.

Loveland reported 22 inches of new snow last Thursday and opened an additional chair. On Friday under blue skies it felt like mid winter. The snow was soft and there were soft bumps appearing on blue and black runs. There are now 3lifts with 21 trails open. I have never skied such good winter soft snow and seen so much terrain open this early. It is time to wax the skis or snowboards and get a jump on this season. Loveland Ski Area will be offering a daily $7.00 lift ticket savings/discount on full day lift tickets this season to Mountain Sports Club members.

Arapahoe Basin reports 2 lifts open, 7 runs and top to bottom skiing and snowboarding. This week will see both Keystone and Copper Mountain open one week early for skiing and snowboarding. In Southwest Colorado Wolf Creek opened this past Friday.

See you on the mountain,

Ski area Openings, More Lift ticket deals and St Mary's Glacier

Fall sure is trying to move quickly into winter in the Colorado high country. The early snows and cold temperatures provided enough foundation and for good snowmaking weather to enable both Arapahoe Basin ( first in the nation on Friday 10.13) and Loveland Ski Area ( next day Saturday 10.14) to open for skiing and riding. This is one of the earliest I can remember having 2 areas open. It sure builds the excitement and enthusiasm for a good season.

We took a hike up to St. Mary's Glacier yesterday as well to get our legs ready for some high country winter treks and to take in the sites. This is and has been one of my favorite hikes and access points to the high country for almost 30 years.

Directions: To get there take I-70 west to exit 238 Fall River Road. Take RD 275 about 11 miles to you past the sign that you have gone over 10,000 feet. From there you will shortly see several parking and trail options. It is 3/4 of a mile to the base of the Glacier (tecnically a snowfield) and the lake. With recent snows of up to 2 feet in parts of the mountains, the glacier offered a significant, but narrow in places, run. At the top of the glacier there were kickers and rails that had been built with an very active backcountry park and jumping scene. There must have been 30 - 40 skiers and riders we saw making the hike and earning turns and jumps. It was sunny and warm making for an awesome October day of playing in the high country.

New spotlight deal for Mountain Sports Club Members this week included daily savings of up to $6.00 valid everyday of the season at Shawnee Peak in Maine.

Labor Day Sales, new retail offers and Jackson Hole Discount

September 4, 2006

Labor Day Ski and snowboard sales have launched the winter 2007 season from coast to coast. These preseason sales once were more pervasive than currently is the case. Preseason sales blowing out last year’s gear began in the weeks right after July 4th and hit their peak this weekend. They will continue sporadically though out the fall until around Columbus Day. These sales are often combined with swaps where you can bring you old gear and try to sell it and use the funds for the new upgrade you just got to have.

These sales surely can be a lot of fun and often combine a festival feel with resorts on hand selling season passes, discount cards and prepackaged sets of tickets at a discounted rate for committing to the local resort now. Colorado has traditionally and continues to be one of the leaders in great deals on gear and passes. The retail wars go back to the middle of last century when two retailers Gart Sports (Now The Sports Authority) and Cooks Sporting Goods would have competing sales. The two that now face off are TSA and Colorado Ski and Golf each Labor day Weekend – The sales are respectively called Sniagrab – bargains spelled backwards and Ski Rex. Great deals and many resort deals abound at each. Even the new gear tends to get discounted close to 20% on the opening weeks of this sale. One word of advice. If you are getting to one of these sales and the special you are looking for is sold out, make sure to get one of the sales reps to go digging for that item. They sometimes will pull one of these hot deals off the rack and hide them if the competitor dropped the price too far. I have personally worked at these sales and seen this done at Colorado Ski and Golf. Then they mysteriously re-appear at a higher price a few weeks later. Be insistent since they have advertised this special.

Keep looking at the deals as they add new ones for the first several weeks in September. Also many of the sales reps can make a deal with you to ensure you do not walk out, so always ask, “Is this the best you can do? Are there any other deals available?”

Now with the increased competition of online retailers ask for comparative pricing. Many will match or beat any verified price on an item that is the same make, year, model, size and color.

Hot deals at resorts: All Colorado Resorts and most nationwide are in the midst of season pass sales. If you are skiing and riding enough, buy them now. This is the best deal of the year and often includes bonus features. One great special on the marketplace is Steamboats Special early season sale offering discounts of up to 25% on lodging and lift tickets that are pre-purchased and prepaid. Steamboat really does not discount so this is a real value if you know you are headed to Steamboat.

Jackson Hole – I know, No TRAM and that is a travesty flat out. But the place still rocks and the skiing and riding is world class. Alpenhof Lodge at the base of Teton Village is offering a 25% discount on stays of 4 nights or more for Mountain Sports Club members.
This is truy a distinctive alpine Bavarian flavored mountain lodge. The dining is excellent and rooms are inviting and comfortable.

Antelope Access to Hall Ranch Ride - Lyons, Colorado

I finally made the trip and rode thye Antelope access to the Hall Ranch ride out of lyons, colodao on Sunday(8.13.06). After one year plus of several good riding buddies trying to convince me to ride the new access to Hall Ranch outside of Lyons, Colorado, I made the trip and ride. Living in Boulder, I often ride the south end of town due to time, but with the family gone, and no need for a permission slip out I went. We met first right on town just before the main drag turns right to Estes Park or left to the main Hall Ranch access, at the Barking Dog Cafe for Java and a scone.
This local coffee shop is a must do for the caffeine fans in the crowd. They have a wireless connection as well if you feel compelled to check your email.

To get to the Antelope Trail access one heads up 36 toward Estes Park out of town. As you head up the canyon look for Apple Valley Road on your left. This is the first turn, take it and follow a couple of miles till you see the next signs for the Antelope trail head access. The parking lot fills quick so more and more folks park in town and ride up. From the trail head it is a nice steady climb up to the main Hall Ranch trail, but nothing too narly. For this rider this approach was so much more doable, nd enjoyable, compared to the front side of Hall Ranch, which always does a number on me. I walk significant sections of the front side. Here I was comfortable yet challenged. The trail was much smoother and the entire ride was very enjoyable.

I will be back and make this a regular ride in the future.

Killington, Jackson Hole Resort Areas added to Member Directory

As we open new sections of the directories and resort towns new deals and merchants keep coming in. Today we just turned Killington live with a commitment from The Cortina Inn. This is and has been one of my favorites to stay in for decades. A true value for those heading to the Killington Pico area.

Earlier this week I was in Summit County and stayed at The New Summit Inn. They are currently listed, but the deals are up in the air. If you are headed there tell them you saw their listing at MountainSportsClub.com and they will extend an offer. In Frisco the classic lodge on Main Street The Frisco Lodge just came online and they are extending benefits to our club members. This historic lodge is a real gem, cozy and friendly right on main street.

To add depth to member benefits we just added these 3 sports shops - High Trail Sports, High Summit Sports and High Road Sports. Value vouchers are now posted online with savings on purchases and rentals.

Jackson Hole becomes another resort addition with member values now available at the Alpenhof Lodge nesteled in the heart of Teton Village. Next town will be Hunter Mountain outside of New York in the Catskill Mountains.

Exciting new deals and partners - shops, stores, resort groups....

Been a while since the last post, but not because nothing is happening. Site is starting to build out and deals are coming in. Just got shop deals on purchases and services at the following - Sun and Ski Sports 16 stores 6 states and their web sites. Also Ski Chalet 3 stores in DC/VA, then Alpine Sports Outlet, Boulder Outdoor Center in Boulder and Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare.

Several other deals are for in store and for online shopping, with several more vendors soon to close. We will have hundreds of dollars in savings for online shopping by the time we get to the Fall. This is a huge value add from the old Ski Card days.

On the resort front I have gotten a signed partnership with INSA and Washington areas on enclsoing a coupon for a FREE membership with all Passports. There are other association programs we will do this with as well. I will start building resort and state areas there and for New Hampshire next. Today SKI NH committed to the same promotional passport program as the resorts in the NorthWest.

Merchant, lodging and resort deals are starting to come in. Make sure your resort is listed and providing your promotional offers for this coming winter season. It is not far away.

Initial Travel Desk Partner is Whitewood Tours. Welcome and look for more travel desk news to come. This now combines with RiverRaftTrips.com to give us winter and summer product offerings.

Steamboat Springs Colorado - Restaurant Reviews

Back in Steamboat working with clients and prospecting new participants for the Mountain Sports Club. On the ride up I remind myself why we are so fortunate to live here. Blue skies with temps in the 80's and cool nights. All the mountains are green with the reservoirs and streams being full of water from peak run-off. Lots of fishing, rafting and kayaking taking place. While in Steamboat I dined at one old faithful restaurant - The Steamboat Pub and Grill for lunch and one I had not been to before - Antares. Both are located downtown. The Steamboat Pub and Grill is located on Lincoln Street, the main drag and has been there since I have been visiting starting in 1979. Good pub food with big screen TV's made for a great environment to watch the France/Spain World Cup soccer match. The one item on the menu that I sampled was an Elk Sausage with an jalapeno sauce. It was excellent. While most of the menu had classic pub sandwiches I wanted to try something different and the elk was what I was looking for. I will return again to watch sports events and enjoy good pub food and atmosphere. Service was friendly while not be over eager.Antares is one block South off Lincoln just across the street from the Eighth Street Steak House on 8th Street. A little more upscale with a great selection of seafood, pasta, Thai and varied cuisine. I ordered the Routt County Leg of Lamb with the house salad. The salad included apple, romano cheese, lettuce and fresh greens and was delightful. The rack of Lamb was good as expected but done a little more than it should have been, resulting in it being dryer than desired. The Martini was too dirty and the service help did not offer to tell me any of the specials and after dinner went right to the check as opposed to offering desert. C for average service. Food and ambiance was nice but service and attention to detail should have been better. I did order desert, flourless Chocolate torte with rasberries. Delightful to say the least. The menu selection was interesting an I may try again. Please provide your dining experiences at these and other restaurants in any mountain town and we will post online at www.MountainSportsclub.com. These reviews will be posted on that site in the respective town and dining sections. Email reviews to reviews@mountainsportsclub.com.These reviews are also posted at www.MountainSportsClub.com resort and members benefits guide, located in the Steamboat Springs, Colorado - Dining section of the guide.

Colorado Ski Country USA Annual Meeting in Steamboat Springs

June 14- 16 - Steamboat Springs, CO

The annual meeting of executives and key members of the 26 member resorts in Colorado gathered for 3 days to review the past year, rekindle friendships and look forward to the future.

The season past was one to celebrate as the state set a record for skiers visits. The member resorts posted over 12. 5 million skiers visits - one person buying one day lift ticket - up over 700,000 visits from last year and over 500,000 from the previous record. Over 1 million skiers/snoboarder visits from the International markets. The bountiful snowfall that lead to record snowfall and over 400 inches in Steamboat built the momentum which carried through to the last resort closing in June at Arapahoe Basin.

I was here to promote the launch of the Mountain Sports Club of NA and work with resorts and businesses in Steamboat Springs, CO to ensure a collection of valuable offers for our members. The initial lodging properties will have their offers appearing in the coming weeks. Resort lift tickets savings will also begin to appear in the member directory as well over the summer months.
